I am the First and the Last.
Before we begin, please read the following Scriptures from God's holy word, the Bible. Note that whenever you read "LORD" (all in capitals) in the Old Testament, in that place is the Holy and Sacred name of the God of Israel - YHWH or YaHWeH. His name looks like this in Hebrew:
Beautiful isn't it! So, remember when you read in your Bible "LORD", it actually is YHWH or YAHWEH.
So, in the following verse it will read: Thus says Yahweh, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, Yahweh of hosts: ‘I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me.
“Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts:
‘I am the first and I am the last,
And there is no God besides Me.
— Isaiah 44:6
When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.
— Revelation 1:17-18
“I am the LORD, that is My name;
I will not give My glory to another,
Nor My praise to graven images.
— Isaiah 42:8
“You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD,
“And My servant whom I have chosen,
So that you may know and believe Me
And understand that I am He.
Before Me there was no God formed,
And there will be none after Me.
“I, even I, am the LORD,
And there is no savior besides Me.
— Isaiah 43:10-11
“Who has performed and accomplished it,
Calling forth the generations from the beginning?
‘I, the LORD, am the first, and with the last. I am He.’”
— Isaiah 41:4
“Listen to Me, O Jacob, even Israel whom I called;
I am He, I am the first, I am also the last.
“Surely My hand founded the earth,
And My right hand spread out the heavens;
When I call to them, they stand together.
— Isaiah 48:12-13
Now the question is why is Jesus using these titles, "I am the First and the Last" in Revelation 17-18? If Jesus is not the God of Israel than this is blasphemy. These divine titles belong to the God of Israel alone (as seen in the above Scriptures in the Old Testament). There is no God beside Him (Isa. 45:5), no other Saviour beside Him (Isa. 43:11) and He does not share His glory with anyone (Isa. 42:8). The only conclusion that we can come to is that Jesus used these divine titles in the book of Revelation because He truly is the God of Israel. The Saviour of the world. He is the First and He is the Last. The Alpha and the Omega - The Aleph and the Tav (More on Aleph Tav in another article to be published).
By the grace of God, we are beginning to see the revelation of the Trinity or the Triune God more clearly as well. We will focus more on the Triune God or Trinity in a soon to be posted article. I will reference it here when I post it: The Revelation of the Triune God.
As a side note, for the critics out there. If Jesus lied and was not telling the truth - then He would not have been raised from the dead. Him being raised from the dead just as He said He would, in accordance with the Scriptures and with many eyewitness accounts (1 Cor. 15:4-8), was living proof that what He claimed and taught was true. Many saw the resurrected Jesus after His death and burial and were martyred because of they saw the risen Christ. In fact, most of the apostles were martyred (killed as a witness of Jesus, carrying the testimony of Jesus) because they boldly claimed to see Jesus Christ risen from the dead. Nobody on this earth will die for something that they know is a lie. Really think about this. People die for something they believe is true, but nobody will die for something that they know is a lie. Would you die for something that you know is a lie? Yet all of the apostles willingly gave their lives and were killed for the fact that they saw the risen and resurrected Lord Jesus Christ. It is noteworthy to mention that were also killed in horrific ways.
The resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ is the Father's approval stamp that indeed Jesus is the Son of God and that everything He claimed and testified is true.
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.
— John 5:39-40
In the above verses the Lord Jesus makes it very clear that the entire Old Testament testifies about Him. The entire point of the Old Testament is the revelation of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - The God of Israel revealing Himself to His people, who are called by His name. As one reads the Old Testament, God's nature, character, will and divine purpose are revealed. The very Scriptures that Jesus says testifies about Him. The fact that Jesus said that the entire Old Testament testifies about Him is a clear indication that that He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Look at the pre-eminence and supremacy of Jesus! Both the Old Testament and the New Testament testify Jesus, the Christ, the Son of the Living God - Who is also the image of the Triune God (Col. 1:15, 19). Both the Old and New Testament point to Jesus! The whole reason why there is an Old Testament, a New Testament is to reveal Jesus to the world. If you take Jesus out of the Old Testament and New Testament - you are left with NOTHING; For He is everything!
Now it makes perfect sense why the Apostle Paul, under the leading and speaking of the Holy Spirit said:
But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,
— Philippians 3:7-8
and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,
— Philippians 3:9
that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;
— Philippians 3:10
Jesus prayed the following to the Father:
that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
— John 17:21
Beloved saints, and those who do not know the Lord Jesus Christ yet. How could the Lord Jesus Christ be in the Father and the Father in Him if He was not God and a mere agency of the Father. For Him to have been in the Father who is eternal, He too must be eternal. What I am saying is that the Son of God is uncreated and equal to the Father (Phil. 2:5-6). The only Begotten Son of God has always been, is now and will forever be in the bosom of the Father. He was there in the beginning with God and the Word was God (John 1:1).
A Son will be Given and His name will be called Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
— Isaiah 9:6
Yes, you just read that Jesus the Son who is given to us will have the government on His shoulders and that His name is called Mighty God, Eternal Father and Prince of Peace! Can this prophecy concerning Jesus the Christ, the Messiah be more clear? There are some heretic cults like the Jehovah witnesses (JWs) and others out there that claim that because Isaiah 9:6 says, "Mighty God", it means that the Son is below God, a mere creature that God created. They claim that it should have said "Almighty God" then it would mean that Jesus, the Son of God is God. Well let's use the Bible to interpret the Bible. We will use God's word to tell us what God's word means when God says Mighty God.
Now in that day the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.
— Isaiah 10:20-21
In the above Scripture, the LORD (Yahweh), the Holy One of Israel is referred to as the mighty God. Their entire claim has been SMASHED with Isaiah 10:20-21. Hallelujah for the word of God! Hallelujah for the following Scriptures, spoken by Peter, the Apostle:
But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
— 2 Peter 1:20-21
You cannot and may not make your own interpretation of Scripture. Period!
I thought I would add this one in to just display His Majesty and the power of His word:
‘Ah Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You, who shows lovingkindness to thousands, but repays the iniquity of fathers into the bosom of their children after them, O great and mighty God. The LORD of hosts is His name;
— Jeremiah 32:17-18
As we can see it is clear that when the Bible refers to the mighty God, indeed the Scriptures are referring to Yahweh, the God of Israel. Jesus, the Son, is called the mighty God in Isaiah 9:6.
I AM WHO I AM - Before Abraham was born, I AM
Read these Scriptures, the picture will become very clear to you:
Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” God, furthermore, said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.
— Exodus 3:13-15
Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”
— John 8:54-57
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM.” Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
— John 8:58-59
The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.”
— John 10:33
By now you should already be surrendering to, worshipping and praising the Lord Jesus Christ, the only way, the only truth and the only life - you cannot come to God except by Jesus...(John 14:6) Why?... Because He is God. He is the God of Israel. If you want to sidestep Jesus, then you dishonour the Father and you actually sidestep the entire Triune God.
For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
— John 5:22-24
He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
— John 3:36
Let us refer back to Exodus 3 and John 8. God clearly tells Moses that His name is I AM. Jesus tells the Jews in John 8 that before Abraham was born I AM. They immediately knew what He did, this why they picked up stones to stone Him... Now why would they stone Him? Well... For blasphemy because they know that Jesus in that one sentence said that He is I AM - The Holy Name of the God of Israel. In fact, the Lord Jesus is saying that Moses was actually speaking to the Him (Jesus) before His incarnation in Bethlehem, in Exodus chapter 3. Yes, Moses was speaking to Jesus, who is I AM, in Exodus 3. It is also noteworthy to mention that Jesus is also implying that He was uncreated here and that He has always existed even before Abraham was born.
If you know your Old Testament, you will see that what Jesus spoke in John 8 fulfils Micah chapter 5, verse 2. The Scriptures agree and confirm this FACT:
“But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Too little to be among the clans of Judah,
From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel.
His goings forth are from long ago,
From the days of eternity.”
— Micah 5:2
"...His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity" - and He will come forth from where...? Bethlehem! Jesus the King of Israel, Yahweh the Saviour, was born in Bethlehem in exact accordance with Micah 5:2.
Now here is a question, how did Micah know that the King of Israel, the One whose goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity. The Bible tells us. Brace yourself - prepare for what you thought you knew to be overthrown with God's word:
Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.
— 1 Peter 1:10-12
So how did Micah, Isaiah, Jeremiah and all the other prophets know about the Christ (translated Messiah in Hebrew), who He is, where He would be born, how He would die, why He would be killed and what He would do for His people?...
Christ told them.
Read 1 Peter 1:10-11 carefully, "Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow"
Dear and beloved ones, you who are reading this - how blessed is it to know that Christ, the Son of God, existed before He was born in Bethlehem - before Abraham was born - before even time began. He has been and always will be.
Before Abraham was born, I AM.
- The Lord Jesus Christ (John 8:58).
The LORD our Righteousness - YHWH our Righteousness
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,
“That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall reign and prosper,
And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
In His days Judah will be saved,
And Israel will dwell safely;
Now this is His name by which He will be called:
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
— Jeremiah 23:5-6
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;
— 1 John 2:1
A King shall reign, coming from the bloodline, royal lineage of David the King. This King shall reign and prosper. He will execute judgement and righteousness in the whole earth. He will be a Saviour and His name will be called: YAHWEH OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. As the Holy Spirit spoke through the Apostle John and said, "Jesus Christ THE righteous". Not a righteous one but the only righteous One. Pay attention to the definite article.
Now these Scriptures will bear much more meaning to you, that are often overlooked:
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham...
— Matthew 1:1
Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name, among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;
— Romans 1:1-5
The above verse is special because the seed of David refers to the humanity of Jesus but right afterwards, this Son of Man who is born of the seed of David is also declared by the Holy Spirit to be the eternal and only Begotten Son of God, who is God, in power - which refers to the divinity of Jesus. Jesus is both God and a Man. Do not forget this. He could not be the Messiah, that crushes the devil's head in Genesis 3:15 if He is not a Man.
And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”
— Genesis 3:15
In the above verse, God warns the serpent, the devil that One will come forth - the Seed of the woman (virgin birth), and He will crush the devil's head. One can say that there are only two seeds on this earth. (1) Those that are of Adam - corrupted by the devil. All of which are the seed of the serpent, the devil. But Hallelujah there is another Seed! (2) The Seed of the woman, Jesus Christ, the Son of Man, the Son of God who now lives in those that follow Him and love Him. These ones are born of God (God's Seed) and are called the children of God by the authority of Christ Himself (John 1:12-13).
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
— John 1:12-13
Do you get it now? There is this war between the devil's seed and God's Seed according to Genesis 3:15. People will perish in the lake of fire because they are of the devil's seed - they resemble him, their father; and since their father is being cast into that place, his children will also be cast into the lake of fire - those that receive the mark of the beast, worship the antichrist, submit to him or the devil. Essentially those that refuse to be born again. If a man is not born from above by believing into Jesus, it is impossible for him to enter the kingdom of God.
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
— John 3:3-6
Do you see the two seeds above (underlined words)? The Seed of God - those born of the Spirit AND the seed of the serpent - those born of flesh only.
Those that are born of God, who have the Christ the precious Seed within them - the Holy Spirit - cannot perish because Eternal Life Himself lives in them and is conforming them to His image, the image of their Father who is in heaven (2 Cor. 3:18). The Seed of God will always inherit the kingdom of God because it is His to inherit - even Him in the believers. Thus, we believers in Christ are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ our Lord (Rom. 8:17).
I find it amazing that as I am revealing who Jesus is (that He is God) as I write this article, the Holy Spirit led me to write about the Seed of the woman and hover / focus on this particular matter. The fact that those who believe into Christ and follow Him are called God's Seed and are born of God. It is crucial!
It occurs to me that this is why the devil so vehemently attacks the teaching and revelation of the divinity of Christ (the fact that Jesus is God). It is an attack on our origin in God and our destiny as the children of God in Christ. There is much more to be revealed here. The very purpose of this article is to reveal Jesus and in so doing SMASH all the lies of the serpent, the devil.
My Lord and my God
Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
— John 20:24-29
Can it be more clearer? Notice that Jesus receives the worship that Thomas gives. Thomas calls Jesus his God. If Jesus was not God, then He should have immediately rebuked Thomas. Just like the fellow servant does with John in the following Scripture
Then he said to me, “Write: Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.” And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God!...
— Revelation 19:9-10
The Firstborn of all Creation
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
— Colossians 1:15-17
For the Son to have created all things, does that not mean that He existed before all things were created?
Now some may say but Colossians 1:15 says that he is the firstborn of all creation. Thus, he is created by God and cannot be God. Let's look into this. We need to use the Bible to interpret the Bible. Many people have opinions and they come with their own understanding of what firstborn means. I am not interested in what men think the firstborn means. I want to know what God's holy word means when He mentions the term “firstborn”. Refer to these Scriptures in Psalm 89 below.
“I have found David My servant;
With My holy oil I have anointed him,
With whom My hand will be established;
My arm also will strengthen him.
— Psalm 89:20-21
“He will cry to Me, ‘You are my Father,
My God, and the rock of my salvation.’
“I also shall make him My firstborn,
The highest of the kings of the earth.
— Psalm 89:26-27
The above (Psalm 89:20-21) and (Psalm 89:26-27), gives us the interpretation of what the firstborn means according to God (not what man thinks) but according to the Bible interpreting the Bible. Here in the context, God is clearly talking about David, the king of Israel. God says that He will make David His firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. The word of God is directly telling us what firstborn means: The highest of the kings of the earth. Thus, we can see that firstborn does not mean an actual firstborn son because David certainly does NOT qualify for this and he was not the first man on this earth. So, it must mean something else. Firstborn means preeminent and supreme - above all others. And in this case, God made king David the highest of the kings of the earth - God's firstborn.
Now if we look deeper and with this revelation in view we will see that this is a type and a glorious one at that! Since this is a type, there must be a fulfilment of it. And now you can appreciate Col. 1:15 so much more. The fulfilment of God's firstborn is the true firstborn of all creation - the Son of Man, Christ Jesus the Lord over all. Preeminent and the highest of all the Kings and Lords.
He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.
— Revelation 19:13
And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
— Revelation 19:16
Behold! The Word of God, Jesus Christ, The KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. The First and the Last. The firstborn of all creation. The true fulfilment of David as a type in Psalm 89.
When the word of God tells us that Jesus is the firstborn of all creation, it is not saying that he was the first creation of the Lord (like the JWs and other heretical groups claim). God's word is saying that He is the supreme LORD above all - Preeminent and LORD over all things. Since David was made by the Lord the highest of the kings of the earth AS God's firstborn. The Lord Jesus Christ as the firstborn of all creation is the supreme King of heaven and earth - the Creator - God over all blessed forever (Romans 9:5).
of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.
— Romans 9:5
Whose Blood?
Read the following Scripture and tell me whose blood is it?
Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
— Acts 20:28
Whose blood is it?... It is God's blood. The Precious Blood of Jesus Christ the Lord - shed for the sins of the world - so that God's wrath would passover (Exodus 12:1-14; John 1:29) those that believe into the name of Jesus so that would be born of God and called the sons of God (John 1:12-13; Romans 8:14-17, 19). It is only the eternal Blood, the Blood of Christ that can wipe out all of the sins of man from the dawn of time to the end of this age.
how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?.
— Hebrews 9:14
The Name of Jesus
The name Jesus is derived from Joshua which means Yahweh the Saviour. This is why the angel told Mary to call her Son, Jesus.
Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
— Luke 1:30-33
the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus
looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds
— Titus 2:13-14
Jesus Forgives Sin
So He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own city. Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, “This Man blasphemes!” But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” And he arose and departed to his house.
— Matthew 9:1-7
There you saw it. Only God can forgive sin because all offenses and sins are against Him. Jesus forgave the man's sin and was accused of blasphemy because the scribes know that only God can forgive sin. They could not recognise that the God who they claim to believe in was standing before them in the flesh. Note how Jesus knew their thoughts. Only God can know our thoughts. Nothing is hidden from Him.
There are more verses that reveal that Jesus is God. When you read the Bible, the Holy Spirit will show you. Ask Jesus to reveal Himself to you more. He will honour that prayer and answer you.
